Customer Review: A classy (and warm) coat

The Jos. A. Bank double-breasted camel hair topcoat is very classy looking. Compared to the Jos. A. Bank single breasted camel hair coat, the double-breasted version is far more detailed, having (in addition to the multitude of extra buttons one would expect from a double-breasted design) cuffed sleeves, a belt in the back, large flap outside pockets, a notched collar that is more detailed than the single breasted coat, and decorative edging on all the seams (strips of camel hair, look at the picture and you can see what I mean on the sleeve cuffs, the pocket flaps, and around the edge of the collar). The single-breasted camel hair coat lacks all these features and is much plainer looking. If plain is what you want, go for the single-breasted coat which is also nice looking but kind of boring in my opinion. I don't usually like double-breasted designs but this coat is an exception.

The coat is also extremely well-made, with very thick cloth and noticably higher quality construction than other coats I have seen. I compared it to the $1000 double-breasted camel hair coat at Brooks Brothers (I wore my Jos. A. Bank coat into the store and put them side by side) and while I could see a very slight difference in the quality of the fabric, it was absolutely minimal, not anything you'd ever notice while wearing or looking at the coat, and certainly not even remotely enough to justify Brooks Brothers' much higher price. The design of the two coats is virtually identical so why pay more?

Camel hair is a very good insulator and is lightweight compared to wool for the same level of insulation. As a result, because this coat is so thick, it will keep you much warmer than a wool coat of equivalent thickness. This, however, means that this coat is not wearable on cool days where a wool overcoat might be appropriate -- it's too warm.

If you want a camel hair coat, this is the one to get. One thing... I've always had the impression that Jos. A. Bank prices like Kohls; their regular prices are deliberately set high so that their sales look better. And EVERYTHING will eventually go on sale. So don't pay $595 for this coat, wait for it to go on sale. I have seen it priced anywhere from 33% to 60% off list from time to time. If you wait you will eventually see it priced at $238.
